The magic of money
There are many, many factors that cause weight gain. Here are 5 startling reasons why we gain weight, apart from the calories eaten vs calories burned theory.
Overproduction of insulin. A little known health issue that affects as many as 25% of the population, insulin resistance causes the body to trigger excess insulin production when we eat. Since insulin tells the body to burn available glucose instead of fat, an excessive amount of insulin will cause storage of fat, even when the fat might otherwise be used for energy.
Hypothyroidism. The thyroid system is responsible for regulation of our metabolism, the pace at which our body expends calories. If you have a sluggish thyroid, you may suffer from low metabolism.
Scrawny muscles. Muscles are our body’s primary engine for using calories. Any physical, whether walking around your block or jogging up a mountain, will burn more calories if there are more muscles involved in the actions. Bigger muscle mass also increases our calorie burn when the body is at rest. Simply said, the bigger the muscles you have, higher the metabolism.
Dehydration. When your body doesn’t have sufficient water to function, it holds on to the water it does have. This creates water retention, which adds inches to our body.
Prescription drugs. A few prescription drugs are known to promote weight gain. They include antidepressants (particularly Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft), steroid anti-inflammatories (prednisone), drugs given for bipolar disorder, and medications given for hyperthyroidism.
